A Dell optiplex 260 P.C used at my work keeps crashing
with the following stop error. STOP: 0X0000008E
(0XC0000005, 0X805AC9E5, 0XF909AD20, 0X00000000).
The machine is totally up to date with SP1 and all
current windows updates. I booted the machine from the
dell resource CD which allows you to run checks on the
hardware in the P.C however this shows up no problems.
Also running a diagnostic check on the disk drive pre-
boot shows no problem. I have ensured also that the BIOS
is up to date.
Any help appreciated

Do a RAM test - I like Memtest86. Plan on letting it run all day or
overnight. I've had problems with Dell machines for clients lately and
although the Dell diagnostics showed no problems, all the boxen needed
new RAM.

8E is an 'unhandled Kernel Exception error. which does not help much,
except that these are nearly always either underlying hardware or
drivers.

I would *suspect* a video driver update from windows update which is not
in fact quite right for *your* card. Check at the card maker's site, or
in the case of Dell I expect it is an nvidia card in which case get
drivers from www.nvidia.com rather than windows update, which for those
cards tend to be badly behind the times
