XP Sounds

I can't get XP to play system sounds, or external
software to play sound. I know the sounds are there and
the kit all works because I can play the
sounds 'manually' in Media Player. I guess I have missed
a checkbox somewhere in control panel but I can't find
it! Grateful for any clues. Matt

In Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices, on second tab (Sounds) either
select Windows Default in the SoundScheme dropdown, or select the sounds you
want linked to various actions in the Program Events list.
