XP Sound problem

Last evening I installed Windows XP. Previously I had
been using Windows 98SE. Since the "complete"
installation (not upgrade) I can not get any sound, nor
is the "normal" speaker icon in the lower right hand
lower screen corner missing.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

if you go into device manager, is there a yellow "!" next to the sound?
start / settings / control panel / system / hardware / device manager

or

start / control panel / performance and maintenance / system / hardware /
device manager
