XP slow shut down

My new XP system has been starting, shuting down, and restarting in around
20-25 seconds... which is just fine.

Recently though, something has happened to my shut down and restart time.
It now takes about 1.5 minutes to get to the "logging off" and "saving
settings" screen. (starting still seems to only take 15-20 seconds to get
to the "sign on" screen... which is OK)

I can't seem to find any info on this problem in the XP Knowledge Base
(searching on "slow shut down" or "shut down").

I tried TerminalServices/StartUpType = Manual, and Computer Configuration
(security Options) Shutdown = "Clear virtual memory pagefile"... as
suggested by PCWorld. I also tried shutting down all my apps manually
before shutdown/startup, but there was no difference.

I'm also up to snuff on my WindowsXP updates.

Can anyone helpget me going in the right direction to try to solve this
problem? Any help would be appreciated... and thanks in advance.

R,
Thanks for that info.
I installed UPHCleanSetup, but that didn't seem to make any difference.
I rebooted several times, and eventlogging shows UPH is loading and working,
but dno joy.
I was very surprised, because my application log is showing just exactly
the errors called out by the UPH article...

Userenv/1517: Windows saved user X registry while an application or
service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the
user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is
no longer in use.

**This is often caused by services running as a user account, try
configuring the
services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.**

Userenv/1524: Windows cannot unload your classes registry file - it
is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded
when it is no longer in use.

I'm afraid I don't know what the asterisked comment is referring to...
something I can tweak?? Not sure what they mean by "services", and where
can I find about configuring them...

I'll take what I have now, and try the KB again.

Thanks again,
Al Camp

do you have applications that stop responding? my cc***.exe for norton is
constantly doing that to me.

Modelingfrog,
Not that I'm aware of... all my apps appear to run just fine. It does
look as though UPHClean has gotten rid of the 1524 and 1517 events, but my
shutdowns and restarts still take about 1.5 minutes.
I'm going to try removing applications that were installed right around
the time this problem started... otherwise, I'm not sure what else I can
try.
Thanks,
Al Camp

I have no more to offer.

have you taken a look at the running process' before you shut down? do a
google on those you don't recognize and see if one is responsible. (be sure
to type the process correctly when searching)

another suggestion is that you shut down in a different fashion. ie; start
menu, task manager, and/or any another way there is. not long ago my
system would shutdown when I click restart using the start GUI

best of luck to you.
sighed;

(maybe if un-installation of software doesn't solve it, you could leave you
system running) its no solution but beats waiting.

Some new ware you've installed is taking time to close.

Plato,
Seems like I wasn't getting anywhere with the MSKB, and other folks help
here on the NG, so... I started pulling recently installed apps off the
system. My first supects were AVG Anti-Virus, or Zone Alarm. (I'm still
doing problem determination, but it looks like ZoneAlarm)
I'm now back to restarting/shutting down in about 20-25 seconds.
Thanks, think I've got a handle on it now...
