Lately I have taken to just holding the power button to bail out of wherever
my computer freezes (usually AOL) and restarting that way. Not sure that
isn't a good way for a crash tho....

I thought I saw a VB script or utility on either Doug's or Kelly's very
helpful XP tip sites a long time ago for speeding up the process, but in
scanning just now I didn't see anything.

IS there a utility to speed up the shutdown/restart of XP or am I imagining
it?

And would the rapid 8 second shutdown (holding the power button down) damage
anything as far as anyone knows?

Thanks!

39. How to improve on shutdown time?

Close apps automatically & quickly at shutdown.
Open Registry by going to START-RUN and typing REGEDIT. Navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\CONTROL PANEL\DESKTOP and look for AutoEndTasks.
Default value is 0. Change it to 1.
Thats all. Further more you can reduce the time it takes for Windows to
issue kill directive to all active/hung applications. In doing this
only constraint that you should make sure exists is that HungAppTimeout
is greater than WaitToKillAppTimeout. Change the values of
WaitToKillAppTimeout to say 3500 (since default value for
HungAppTimeout 5000 and for WaitToKillAppTimeout is 20000)

Shutdown XP faster.
RegScrubXP

Open RegScrub, click on Misc, click on Shutdown XP faster, click on
Modify.

You can email me if you want a hand with HiJackThis log file.

Thank you for the answers! I will first modify the registry as suggested.
My system is kept pretty clean, I honestly am not worried about
ad/spyware/viruses being the cause. It's just a lot of resident programs
waiting to be killed beofre bailing out of Windows I reckon.

Thanks again, great suggestions!

First suggested solution: Get rid of AOL (if you can!!!)
Second suggested solution: Use Hibernation instead of Shutdown (See Start >
Control Panel > Power Options > Advanced)
