i have a small home network connected to a westell modem.
everything works fine when you first log in.
but after several hours running programs, opening browsers, opening explorer
takes a very long time. also mapped drives become disconnected. i am ot
using static IP, but i do have a domain server.
could this be related to the router somehow?

It might be something to do with your sticky keyboard.

i run cleanup and defrag once per week.
as i said, this problem occurs after the PC has been on for several hours.
when first booted or re-logon everything hums along.

Could be that you're getting many errors due to noisy or weak signals and to
compensate for that your modem is shifting to a lower speed.
