XP Shutdown

I am using XP Home SP2
If I attempt to shut down the PC with Start/Turn off Computer/Turn Off or
Standby the screen hangs at the "Windows is shutting down" screen. Usually
the only option is to power off. On restarting, the PC runs normally.
Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.

Here is a link to an excellent shutdown troubleshooter:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

In addition, this problem is usually caused by some process and/or
program that is refusing to exit gracefully. Most often the culprit is
malware, so take steps to insure that your computer is 100% spyware and
virus-free. If, after you've gone through the troubleshooter, you'd
like malware removal steps please post back to this thread.
