xp shutdown problem

Dear fellow xp users

Running xp home - had a recent power failure while using the pc and now my
pc wont shut down properly. It reaches the "Saving settings" screen, the
power light goes off but the fan keeps running. I have to hold the power
button in to get the fan to shut off.

Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this other than a reinstall?
