Due to problems (related to networking), I decided to format my hard
disk and re-install XP (home).

Now, while installing, the setup just stops at a point when according
the setup program has reached a point where it is "installing network".
I've tried two different XP setup disks, same result (thus it is
probably not due to faulty CD's).

I thought that this might be due to some problem with the network
adapter, but before I did format my hard disk (while having problems
connecting to the internet), I tried "pinging" my external ADSL modem,
which worked. Thus, the network adapter seems to work at least in that
sense.

Any ideas as to what might be up, I'm interested to hear.

Btw. I'm not a regular reader of this forum, so if info is available
in some faq or so, then I'm sorry to bother, but would still be
interested in receiving a pointer. I did a google searc, and noticed,
that there are other people who have asked the exactly same question on
other forums, but unfortunately, their questions had not (at least I
could not find them) received any answers.

The nic should be pulled during setup, and added later.

Tried that already. Removed network card. Formatted HDD.

Nothing changes. Setup freezes at "Installing Network",
where the bar indicating progress of setup is approx.
half-way through.

Due to some other problems I'm having (e.g. disk stations
suddenly starting to give up on me - with just weeks in
between) I'm wondering, whether there could be something
wrong with the power supply (I will check that soon).

But why would that manifest itself at the "Installing
Network" part of the setup?

Any info would be appreciated.

It would not be installing any network stuff, if you had no hardware installed for using a network. Do you also have a NIC on the
MoBo that the setup might be trying to use?

Many have seen your setup error over the years XP has been around, and it was always a hardware/driver conflict of some kind. Setup
creates several log file during the attempt, and you might be far enough along to see a %windir%/SETUPAPI.log (and/or setuperr.log)

There is no network plug at least. And no sign of anything related to
network (or LAN) in the BIOS as far as I have been able to figure
out. But in any case, with the network card removed it still enters
the installing network phase. Unfortunately, the original motherboard
broke down, and when the computer was fixed a different board was
used as a replacement, and I haven't received a manual (and haven't
checked for one on the net yet) for that board.

OK. Thanks.

But the funny thing is that I managed to install XP on this machine with
exactly the same hardware one month earlier. If there is some kind of
hardware/driver confilct, then why wasn't there one previously?
