Hi -
Is it possible to reinstall XP (Prof) SP2? I have run sfc and it wants my XP
disk to be inserted. However, the CD on the laptop isn't working and the sfc
will not read from a USB external CD drive.

There seems to be many files that it wants to replace/repair so I am
wondering if reinstalling SP2 would do the trick.

Any advice on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Brian.

Many thanks to everyone for the helpful replies. I went to the site
recommended by Mike and followed the suggestion to change the CD drive
letter in the registery for SFC to that of my external CD drive. Worked a
treat!

The reason I wanted to run SFC was that I cannot install Windows updates
manually. They download OK then the installation procedure runs but then I
get a box saying that they have not been installed. I have tried all of the
fixes I can find at Microsoft and have also used 'Dial a Fix' but without
success. I can however, using Automatic Updates, install them upon Shutdown.
I figured that if there were some missing or corrupt files that that may be
the cause of the problem. It wasn't!

Anyway, again, many thanks to everyone for the help.
Cheers,
Brian.
