xp service pack

ive just done a fresh install of windows xp, no probs
but when i try to install the latest service pack my pc
freezes up, and i have to reboot.
any ideas anyone ?
 
Place the XP CD in the drive, when the setup screen appears, select "Check
System Compatibility" and see if it turns up any issues on your setup.
NOTE: if after running the compatibility wizard, it begins XP setup, just
exit at the first screen that gives you the opportunity and boot back to the
desktop.
