XP Service Pack 2 install failure

Tim Munro

Hi all,

I'm trying to install XP SP2 in a rather large image (deployed is about
11GB) for our student labs. The image is in Sysprep Factory mode, when I
begin. I've made sure all security is at "Setup Security" levels, via the
"Security and configuration" plugin for MMC. I install SP2, which proceeds
fine. After it finishes and reboots, I'm getting the following error:

'The instruction at "0x00000000" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The
memory could not be read.'

This has occured for:
svchost.exe
MCI command handling window: winlogon.exe
lsass.exe
explorer.exe

It's not always the same order and it's not always the same processes dying.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tim,

perhaps http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm contains a hint at
the cause of this problem.

Unfortunately, none of the suggestions in the link were applicable or
worked. I'd really hate to have to rebuild the entire image from scratch,
just to incorporate SP2. This would be extremely time consuming.

Tim,

oh, that's a rare case! If you find the cause or a workaround,
please let me know.
