XP Service pack 2 dies during install

SP2 dies when backing up the registry. It first backs up all the files,
then when backing up the registry, it slows to a snails pace and then
finally just quits responding. I have to reboot to get the system back.
Have tried it several times and get same results. The cpu is pegged but
nothing is happening. I have the SP2 cd. I have no indication of any
problems with the current system (XP Pro).

I searched the KB but found nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

its only 'mostly dead'

it seems to slow down, but that's the way it installs,
you just need to wait it out next time
