XP sees my laptop as a standard pc

hi all. i have recently upgraded my advent 5471 laptop from windows ME to
windows XP SP2. The battery worked fine with ME but with XP it it behaves
very strangely. it will charge for a while and then stop and say there is no
battery and run just on mains. if i unplug the ac adaptor it cuts off. yet if
i start the laptop from the battery it starts perfectly but says it is
running on AC power. the battery is not even listed in device manager. one
other thing, on my other laptop, in device manager it is recognised as a
uniprocessor pc (or somethig like that), but the advent is seen as a standard
pc. i have tried to change this but was unsucessful. i have also tried to
install xp while running on battery only but again it was seen as a standard
pc.
has anyone had this problem before or have any advice??

thanks in advance.

regards paul.

Have you downloaded and installed ALL drivers for your system from the
manufacturer. If this computer came with ME there may not be appropriate
drivers for the motherboard for XP. Since the motherboard talks with the OS
through the drivers this is probably your problem.

Does the computer charge the battery properly with the computer turned off?

hi. yes it charges fine when switched off. in device manager, there is no
"other devices" or devices without the driver installed. everything was
installed during the initial XP installation. i have been unable to find a
bios update for the board, but if i did find one, could this solve my problem?

thanks

OK, there is obviously nothing wrong with the charging circuit of the laptop
so therefore you have a software problem. There is the possibility that a
bios update will fix the problem but since you didn't have the problem with
ME, I would still suspect a driver problem. Since the manufacturer doesn't
support their systems, you may really be out of luck. Where did you get the
XP drivers for the laptop from?

Did you run the XP upgrade advisor prior to running the XP install on the
laptop. If so did it show anything that could have been a potential
problem?

http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/advent/laptop/5471.htm - If the information on
this web site is accurate, I can't believe that you are actually enjoying
the speed of the laptop with XP installed even with your battery issue.

hi. sorry for the long delay. i didn't run the advisor no. i simply inserted
the cd, started up and installed. all the drivers were installed
automatically during installation. i am now having the same problem with a
toshiba tecra. i thought maybe it was something to do with the installation
cd but when i tried it on another laptop it worked fine. this is a real head
scratcher for me.
