Why is it that when I'm searching for a file using a wild card, if the
search finds a lot of files e.g. *.jpg, once the search has finished, it
stops responding so I can't sort, delete, etc, and my CPU is running at full
capacity?

Not sure.
XP search does like to show media files as thumbnails -
maybe it's having a problem building those.

You could try download "agent ransack".
It's a lot quicker and smarter than XP's
"search companion"
