xp scan disk

When I first boot up my computer it goes to scan disk and
if I do not hit a key it will run scan disk for 3 hours.
If i hit a key before the 10 seconds is up everything is
happy and xp runs fine...Help

It happens when windows wasn't shutdown properly.
There is a possible file system corruption.
You should let it finish its job.

If you skip it and can boot normally, then it means that either the
corrupted part of the file system hasn't been used or there isn't any
corruption at all.

If your hard disk has a lot of files, the disk checking can take a long
time to finish.
