XP scan disk error checking not functioning

Does anyone know how to get the scan disk error checking
function working?

I go to my c drive and right click, go to properties and
then click on error checking. Nothing happens anymore. It
used to work fine.

open a dos box (enter CMD in the run box)
and enter chkdsk c: /f

What happens?
