Following on from topic below.

I am trying to repair my XP but can't get past the log in stage.

I get asked Which windows installation do you want to repair?

I'm guessing the answer is 1 here.

After hitting that I get asked for the log in password. I don't log in on
this PC.

The replier below suggests tab and return etc.

I find there is no way of positioning my cursor. There is no mouse control.

After hitting return I get:

C:\Windows>

What do I do next?

Do not press "R" for repair, read this weblink on how to do a repair
install,
this is some very good info.

You are loading the recovary Console rather then repair installing
windows, and there is no mouse control becasue recovary console is a
command based shell, it dosnt need a mouse.

Doing a repair can be somewhat confusing. people automatically assume that
the first mention of 'R' on the screen is the time they need to press 'R' to
repair the operating system. Unfortunately, this only opens recovery
console, which is a command line option. I suppose, whoever gave you the
instructions for the repair, should have indicated that you do not press the
'R' option until 'after' you have accepted the EULA (End user Licence
Agreement) It is at this stage that the repair option becomes available.
