XP Repair due to AOL runtime error

As I as unable to find my previous post, trying again...I am getting Visual
C++ runtime errors during AOL sessions and when closing down AOL. According
to the Microsoft Knowledge Base, reinstalling AOL fixes the problem. I have
reinstalled AOL THREE times to no avail. The "experts" at AOL told me to
reformat the hard drive.

Before resorting to that, I tried to use "last known good" but there are no
dates bolded aside from when I first reinstalled AOL which is known NOT to be
good. Then, thought I would try to repair Windows XP by utilizing the setup
disk. When I do that, I get an error message which says the version one PC
is newer than the disk so I cannot re-install or repair.

I'm pretty sure this is because of the service packs. If not, will someone
please advise. Anyway, can I uninstall the service packs (if so, how) then
repair the XP then reinstall the service packs?

I am running XP Pro on a wireless home network if that matters.

Before you DECIDE to kill the drive... I'd seriously have a go at AOL. I've
read that AOL is very unstable for a lot of people, although that's mostly
the AOL DSL connection, but there are quite a few ppl getting angry about
their PC's stability going to the dogs after using AOL 8, or 9, for a while.

My machine keeps telling me that the DSL connection was lost; AOL once told
me to change my passwords IN CASE someone was hacking my pc, also told me
that they know about the problem 'but, could you just bear with us for a
while whilst we attept to sort it out?' - still happening 12 months on.

AOL either don't know much, or try not to tell you exactly what's going on.

Seriously, I'd attepmt to avoid AOL help at all costs.! Find tecchie help
elsewhere.

1) Take the AOHELL CD

2) If you are old enough to drive, and have a licence, place it in the
middle of the drive and back over it several times.

3) If you are not old enough to drive - or don't have a licence - place
said CD in the microwave and cook on full power for a couple of minutes - it
really is fascinating, and most satisfying, to watch.

4) Place resulting mess in the rubbish

5) Pick up the phone, call AOHELL 'Customer Service' and tell them you
wish to cancel your account. Don't, however tempting it might be, let them
persuade you to stay with offers of 'free' months.

6) Ask people for recommendations for a proper ISP.

7) Call new ISP of choice and sign up.

There! Problem solved.

Unfortunately, removing AOHELL's trojanic software will, most likely,
require a complete format and reinstall.
