XP Repair boot from distro CD ?

Does an XP media have a bootable repair proceedure ? Assuming yes,
how exact does the revision level have to be ?

I have a compaq laptop that does a BSOD during boot and I'd like to
try to recover the system before I blow away the system and restore
from scratch. The laptop came with CDs that can only restore the
machine to the factore configuration. I knew that when I bought it,
I always buy retail media for business critical systems.

From the factory it runs XP/pro. The system has been updated
to SP1a. Can I buy or borrow any XP media and try to do
a recovery ? I know I'd have to reapply patches afterwords.

DOes it matter if all I can get is an SP1a CD ?

Thanks

No, any 'ol Windows XP Pro CD cannot be used with
a computer running Windows Media Center Edition.

What you would need is OEM media. Retail won't work for you unless you
mess around with the setupp.ini file on the CD.

Carey,

The OP was not talking about XP Media Centre edition. They have a plain
Recovery CD. They wanted to know if they could use a full version of XP Pro
install CD (bought or borrowed) and run the Recovery from it.
