XP repair adds user account password after repair

I have a client PC running XP Home SP1. The PC started hanging after the
splash screen. Could not access user safe mode to work on unit. Decided to go
through the repair function via setup. After the process ended and the
computer rebooted, the user was prompted for a password. Same with the admin
account. No passwords were set prior to this. One idiosyncrasy was, I was
able to access the OS s using the recovery console with the admin account
which did not ask me for a password. Anyone else had this situation go down?
This is the second time I have come across this. Found nothing in the Msoft
knowledge base.

Thanks, but I already went to that article. The problem is that after doing
an OS repair, the system came back up to the Welcome logon screen but now is
requiring a password.

Did you try in the Administrator logon leaving the password pane alone
(ie blank password)? The fact that it has decided to prompt does not
imply that there is a non-null password

Yes. It would not login without a password. Strange. I have seen this once
before. Only thing to do was take the drive out and put it into another PC
and recover the data and do a clean install. I cannot remember if both
happened with SP2 installed ...
