I disconnected the internet connection and zeroed out the hard drive.
Downloaded the 6 disk reload and reinstalled XP Home edition. I did this to
kill a trojan and other viruses. I now am missing some drivers and need to
reconnect to the internet to get them. I am going to install Norton
Antivirus 2005 before I connect. I also have the XP Service Pack 2 disk that
I received in the mail. What is the best sequence for protecting the
computer from viruses and trojans while getting the updates I need? Thanks,
Jim

Do not even think about connecting to the internet until you have antivirus
software and a firewall running.

Internet Storm Center: "If you know of someone who is about to receive a
new computer, or if you have received one yourself, please, please read our
new Windows XP survival guide, 'Windows XP: Surviving the First Day. (PDF)'"

Before connecting to the internet, install SP2 from your SP2 CD,
then install your antivirus program. Afterward, obtain the lasted
virus definition updates for your antivirus program.

Also, install a good antispyware program:

Get Windows XP Service Pack 2 with Advanced Security Technologies:

Don't forget that some drivers (NVidia graphic drivers, for ex, as per
NVidia website instructions) are best installed without any antivirus
running. If your drivers are on some major vendors' sites, you can download
w/o installing AV. As of late, AV and firewall are the last programs I
install - they might mess up and surely slow down the installation of
drivers and programs.
