Greetings.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1100 laptop and due to a minor hardware issue, Dell
recommended I reinstall windows XP home edition.

I completed the process, and setup connected to the internet via our 11mbit
Wireless lan (802.11b - PCMCIA adapter), and updated it's files.

When setup completed, logging on requires that Windows XP is activated.
Upon entering the details, and go through the menus, It fails everytime.

Why? Probably because windows decided to forget my networks settings - Oh
wait - I can't fix them, because windows wont let me login to my own computer.

What is microsoft's solution to this problem? I am truly fed up of having my
time excessively wasted by your products constantly failing in some way.

Please assist in this matter, or inform someone who can to help me!

You can activate by phone, just follow the instructions for manual
activation.

In my experience your problem with the above is generally due to user
ignorance that can be corrected by learning something about the complex
piece of hardware you are running.

I have MANY computers and find them to run nicely and smoothly all year
long.

Thank you for your reply.

I completely agree with you. This is not my pc - this is my fathers pc - I
have a lot of experience with windows and I am constantly on call to repair
them, What I should have said was that I am always having problems with
windows XP machines, I mean all the time! Its crazy. Whenever I install
windows 2000, it doesn't need reinstalling a week later.

And yes, I must be ignorant for not noticing the option of phoning in, But I
still do not see how they can activate my XP from their end if I have no
internet access!

Thank you for your help

RE. Dell support, or any other manufacturer support for that matter.. it is
easier for them to tell a user to re-install the OS.. operating in the MS
newsgroups are many people with a way more ability and range than the
average manufacturer help desk.. at least you have now found a place where
you can learn to use and maintain XP properly..

There are countless users of XP out there who have no problems.. invariably,
those that do have problems are themselves responsible.. if XP was so
inherently bad, or any MS product for that matter, nobody would use them..

That's because you haven't done it yet. Call the number and you will learn
how they can activate it without an Internet connection.

I know people that crash cars... It's not the poor cars fault, or the car
manufacturers fault. They're just terrible drivers.

The same can be said for many people using PCs that crash often.
