I followed instructions for install and clean
install, I am still having problems for instance; on
startup I get msg "cannot find bios from diskette or
harddrive".
In addition it won't boot at all sometimes,
crahses when I try to install software, beeps incessantly
on startup, and there is a white setup scan line at the
bottom of the screen on boot up. Now it's just dead.
Good you advise please.

I should let you know I do not have an internet connection
right now, could this be part of the problem?

Is this an older model Compaq you are installing on? If
my memory serves me right, older Compaq's had the bios on
the harddrive as opposed to a chip on the motherboard.

No it's not an older machine however, the copy of xp (cuz
I cant find my original) came from a compaq notebook
computer) could this be the problem.

YES, the copies of an OS that come with a notebook are customized only to
work with that brand (and sometimes only that model) of notebook. Running
this on another system (especially a desktop) is very likely to generate all
sorts of problems such as you reported.

You need to find/get a copy of the proper OS for your system. If it is a
clone, you can use a Retail version, if it is a large-mfr creation, you need
their specially designed OEM version. If OEM is required, contact your mfr
for help. If Retail and you originally purchased it and Registered it
(different from Activation), call MS Customer Support in your country and
they should be able to help you.
