XP Registry Find Causes Crash

If I execute a Find command in regedit the system crashes.

Event log:
The bugcheck was: 0x00000051 (0x00000004, 0x00000001, 0xe119c560, 0x00080080)

Also happens with reg checking tools that scan the registry.

I'd rather not use a restore point as I don't know when the problem happened.

Any ideas how to deal with this short of a format or restore point?

More info:

If I open Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder Options... when I click on the
File Types tab the system crashes.

Any way to force the registry to the defaults for File Types? I kow I would
loose application file types but that is better than rebuilding the PC.

Hi,

I find references to that error and Win2000, but nothing substantial in
WinXP. How long has this been going on? As it affects all registry tools, I
would think the problem lies in the registry files themselves. Have you
tried running a disk check yet?

I ran a chkdsk and it didn't find any problems.

My guess is the problem is related to a realitvly new ATI RADEON graphics
card. I had to uninstaller/re-install. Not sure when the registry issue came
up.

On occasion I get explorer crash reports that a driver failed (stuck in
thread?) but it doesn't tell me what driver is having the problem. System
Event log does not record the driver problem.

I recently installed the 11/05 ATI drivers and the problem is still present.
The PC crashhed after reboot after the driver install. The problem could be
the driver or could be the registry.

I am now also seeing after login:

Windows - Registry Recovery
One of te files cntaining the system's registry data had to be recovered by
use of a log or alternate copy. The recovery was succesful.

I've google'd around and haven't found out what I can do about this message.

I guess I need to use the way back machine and go back a couple of system
restore points.

All of this started witht he install of an ATI 850 video card - works great
when it isn't crashing the PC. In trying to resolve the crashes I did several
laps with the drivers and utilities. In all cases I eventuly got to the point
where the registry was corrupted and some error made itself known. Usually
with a registry recovery message at login time.

I uninstalled all the ATI drivers I could find and went back to my MSI
nVidia FX5700. For good measure I added a new user so I could abandon the old
HKCU hive.

The PC is stable and for some reason looks better that before - before being
during the ATI infestation and even before when I was using the FX5700. I'm
guess dumping the HKCU hive had a profound effect. In any case beside
dropping 20FPS or so in FS2004 (70 down to mid 50's) it's working fine.
