I have a Windows 98 H/D that I have mounted into an external case. I need a
few "My Document" files off the H/D. Is it possible to have Windows XP read
what I suspect is a FAT32 H/D??

Windows XP can read most FAT systems and NTFS.

But when I plugin the USB cable, the drive isn't detected. What am I doiing
wrong?

I have no idea. You have not given much information.
You have it "mounted in an external case"...

- Can any other computer access a drive mounted in that external case?
- Did you make sure the jumper settings on the old drive were set in
accordance witht he needs of the external case?
- I assume it is a powered case - the drive is powered up before connecting
it or after?
- Have you used your USB ports for anything else (to ensure they function?)

I have seen some of these less expensive external drive cases just 'not work
consistently'.

Windows XP can read and use NTFS, FAT32, FAT16, and FAT12, in any and all
combinations--separately or
together-- and regardless of what file system it itself is installed on.
