XP reactivation problem

Paul

After hardware change Windows XP refuses to start.
It states that I need to revalidate my XP.
However it does not start any program that would allow me to revalidate!

How can I bring XP so far that it will run the reactivation program?

Thanks,
Paul

So much for your money's worth, huh? I once had a prob with XP and attempted
to use its "Recovery Console" which only made things even worse. Ironically
enough, I had to use Linux to fix Windows because no-Windows CD or utility
would do the job.... Since then I bowed never again to use the "recovery
console". Then another time I had also problems reactivating the OS.

Paul have you TRIED calling Microsoft?

I've changed hardware before and simply had to call Microsoft to get
everything re-established on the new PC.

Hello Adam,

Yes Itried to call but you know they give you only 2 free support calls and it is very dificult to
get them on the line and give good answer.
They did say that when I had a preinstalled XP It might be that I am stuck with this disk.
I try to get as much info I can untill I have solved this issue.

Paul I hear you, or you get "you must call your PC
manufacturer" to assist you, goodbye.

Good luck, have you tried to get it to boot in safe mode?
f8 during boot up, I believe. Concur that recovery console
is a waste.

Hello Mark,

I can boot in any mode.
It will detect that my hardware did change too much and will say:

in Safe mode: You can not reactivate in safe mode Do you want to reboot?

in normal mode: Press Control_Alt_Delete to begin
Name Password
You need to recativate XP do you want to do that? Yes/No?
Answer Yes
Windows is logging of
Press control_Alt_Delete to begin.

So I am back to Square One.

I can set any file on the disk since I can have it as an external disk and can access it.
I even can change the Register file since it will boot from external on that disk.
But when it is the internal disk it will refuse.
So what I want to know is how do I force windows to run the
%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

Script and let me activate the XP on that disk?
I just want to do the legal path and play the game with Microsoft and use their approved software.
So how do I get XP on my machine so nice that it allows me that I can do what it asks me to do.

Thanks
Paul

Hmmm, I replaced a motherboard once and the same thing
happened, XP just refused to boot. I ended up reformatting
and reloading XP.

I doubt it's a hardware issue, you usually see the blue screen
of death then.

Does it actually say revalidate, or does it say activate?

If it says revalidate then something is amiss.

What hardware did you change? The motherboard perhaps?

If so then you *must* do a Repair Install of Windows XP as per the
instructions at http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

A Repair Install will preserve all of your installed applications,
user data files, and program configuration settings. However Windows
Updates will have to be reinstalled.

Good luck

Hello Ron Martell,

Your link is very informative but still does not solve my situation.

The computer does boot. It goes till the point where it says:
Press Control_Alt_Delete to begin.
Then I can login with my name and password.
After login there comes the message You have to reactivate XP do you want to do that now Yes/No
I choose Yes but I do not get the activation wizard to run.
In stead of running the activation wizard it logs off and returns to the
Press Control_Alt_Delete to begin.

Since I did copy my Cdrive on a new disk I can change whatever I want on that disk.
I even can boot and run with that disk as an external disk.
Then the original disk is inside and the new disk on the firwire.
In this configuration it does run correct.
I boot from firewire and the new disk is accepted.
When I exchange the disks and have the
new disk internal then I have to reactivate.

My question is :
How do I get the reactivation programm start and run so that I can do this reactivation.
Is there a trick to let it start earlier, different, from batch, whatever.

Changed are :
Motherboard due to Powerfailure, Guarantee repair by supplier,
This votes for Mac Addrss and DVD/CD_RW as changed.
Compuer: Sony Vaio GRV680P Laptop.
New Change: Harddrive. Copy C: and D: from Old to New drive with Partition Magic.
The last change does trigger the reactivation request.

Thanks,
Paul
