I've misplaced the XP install CD that came with my desktop
system. I do have the XP install CD that came with my
laptop. Can I use the laptop CD to reinstall XP on the
desktop if I use the Product ID that can with the desktop
version?

Thanks in advance,

QDman

If they are both the same version , then yes you can but
be certain that they are the same version , like OEM to
OEM , or retail to retail version

They are both versions that came with their respective
computers (emachine desktop and HP laptop), so hopefully
that will work.

Thanks for the quick response.

Very well might not. Laptop installs are very proprietary.

You can always try, but the disks that come with different makers'
installations will probably be set to accept Keys from different series.
More to the point a laptop usually has custom hardware to some extent at
least, with a variant version of the system that would not suit the
other machine
