i have an unfixxable prob on win xp home and i wanted to
reformat my harddrive and reinstall windows xp, but i
wouldnt be able to activate it, plus xp wont let me
reformat, is there a solution to either one of these
problems(prefferably both).
p.s. the "unfixable" problem is that when i stay on the
internet for about 15 min. it says "system shutdown" in a
new window and it shuts down after 1 minute. it's "called
upon by 'NT AUTHORITY/System'." it may have something to
do with when i originally installed it, it couldnt
install something i dont remember it exactly but it
was "something redundancy check." Any way to fix this?

Anthony, your problem is not unfixable. You have a worm called Blaster, that
you got just by being online. If you were current with your MS critical
updates, this would not have happened. Also, you need to enable your
firewall - see Help and Support for this.

Meanwhile, you need to download and run the Stinger removal tool. If you
cannot download from your machine, use a floppy on some other machine with
XP. You need to scan for viruses regularly. There are over 63,000 different
viruses so far!

I think the problem is a virus...the Lovesan..there is a
fix ..go to Symantec and there is a downlaod for the
virus...it's easy...good luck

For the reformat issue, I just used a bootable disk (I
actually used my old Win98 disk) to do the reformat. You
can get bootable freeware from the web - that is, if you
have access from somewhere else.

As for the activation, I didn't have any problems
reactivating at least three XPs that I had to reinstall
on three different machines. I did call Microsoft to
inquire about installing a different ID number on a
different computer that had been activated and registered
earlier - I never recorded which IDs went on which
computer during my original installation. Microsoft
verified my IDs and said all was OK to redo the
installation. All I had to do was re-activate and re-
register after the installations were completed.
