I recently rebuilt my daughter's computer by installing a new motherboard,
keeping old hard drive and most other components. After install Win98 would
not fully boot in normal mode and would not read cd in either safe mode or
any "crippled" normal mode. Figuring that there was some conflict between
the old OS and new chipset I decided to reinstall OS. Since I did not have
Win98 media I decided to go directly to XP Pro. Only way to read cd in
order to do the install was to boot from floppy. After doing that, XP
install went a bit rough but finally finished ok. Now the problem, though,
is that after booting to the "Welcome" screen, attempt to log in to any user
account causes prompt "No disk in drive .... Insert Disk in A: ....
ancel -- Retry -- Continue."
Putting any floppy in A: will satisfy the machine, no matter what files are
on it or if it is empty, as long as it is formatted. Also, clicking on
"Continue" three times in succession lets the machine go on and finish the
login.
The machine is usable now, but I hate to leave this strange quirk on it for
my daughter to have to contend with. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
in advance.
