XP PROFILES NEED TO BE COPIED DUE TO NEW USERNAME

Good morning. I have an issue that needs fixing quickly and I'm here
searching for direction.

I have just started helping manage a small LAN. Very very small. 10
systems, 1 win2k server. Problem is, each user pretty much uses the same
applications HOWEVER they all login with the same username.

I want to change this to where they all have their own usernames so I can
setup roaming profiles.

Question: I know how to copy user profiles but 9 times out of 10 I have to
re-register applications, redo setups, etc. Is this avoidable?

What steps if any should I be aware of before copying user profiles?
