My son has xp professional on his machine last night he
tried to download java from microsoft upgrdes and it hung
up and now he cant get passed setup in other words he can
do nothing on his computer that is back ground to the
fault I will now give you the error message he gets .It is
as follows Settup had problems regestering the followong
OLE control DLL c:/windows/system32/INITPKI.DLL the
signature for xp professional upgrade is invalid ERROR
CODE 426 service has not been started setup failed to
install the product catalogues fatal error the setup log
files should contain more information. I would be so
gratedfull to get this problem fixed for him as he is
doing exams at college right now and really needs his
computer for doing work on many thanks in advance from a
desperate father .

System restore might help you undo thew damage, then go try Sun Java. Good
luck.

Your post doesn't actually make sense regarding Java, but your son
should try to get into Safe Mode and do a System Restore to before he
did whatever he really did.

If you cannot restore... sigh... I assume he has the
installation CD that came with it. MS is so sure of XP
they're not sending repair CD's out anymore. Try calling
the manufacturer (Dell, Gateway, IBM, whomever. This is
your best help.
If they don't have ideas you'll have to re-install
Windows. I'd suggest using a windows 98 3-1/2 floppy to
boot up to, do an f-disk command at the prompt (this is
only if everything else fails (supports desks))
format your hard drive from the f-disk menu and it'll be
a much cleaner installation than the mass ghost
installations they are doing in the factories.
