My computer thinks it is in XP setup mode. However, I insert the XP Home edition CD upgrade version and it stops installing with about 13 minutes left. I would like to know if installing XP Professional will over ride this mess. I cannot even start the computer in SAFE Mode.

Probably not. XP Home and XP Pro are identical expect for certain
functions and capabilities that are found only in XP Pro. They are
both compiled from the same source code base.

Try booting from XP Home CD and then doing a Repair Install as per the
instructions at http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
