xp professional upgrade

i recently upgraded from xp home to xp pro on my
notebook, but certin things are not working properly,
namely all usb connections ( haven't tried any others).
what gives? should i just go back to xp home?

That would include formatting your computer and losing any non-backed up
data.

Have you looked in device manager? Can you share what you see there?
Anything in your event log when you try to use the USB devices? Have you
removed the USB devices in device manager and rebooted? Did you install SP1
again to see if that helped? When was the last time you went to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and scanned for updates and installed
all the critical updates?

Is there a lower cost upgrade option to go from XP Home to
XP Pro ? Or did you have to pay the ~$150 to buy a
general XP Pro upgrade CD ?

Pretty much you have to purchase an Upgrade or Full Retail XP Pro CD.
Whatever that might cost for you from where ever you choose to buy it.

If you are working for an academic institution, you might be able to get the
XP Pro Upgrade (RETAIL) for $80-$100. Don't buy OEM software, it's not an
upgrade, it's a Format and start over ordeal.
