XP Professional - MS Word - insert symbol

I need to insert a symbol into a document but when I go
to the Insert menu and click on 'symbol' nothing
happens. Have used symbols loads of times in the past,
no problem, so I am really confused by this. Any advice
would be welcomed.

Within Word click on Help, click the down arrow, click on
detect and repair. Have you office cd-rom disk near by
