xp professional IE crashing

IE crashes when I use a link inbedded in outlook/ outlook express. all IE
window open at the time (either 1 or 10) close. Explorer process seems to be
resetting. any solution for this XP bug? Or any known compatibility issues?
No major changes or installs to the box. started after security updates.
anyone else have this problem?
