Hi,

Here's the problem, after installing SP2 I restarted and
got a blue screen with this message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut
down to protect your computer

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error
screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears
again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is
properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or
software manufacturer for any windows updates you might
need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly
installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory
options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable
components, restart your computer, press F* to select
Advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

***STOP: 0x0000000A (0x006BC936, 0x0000001C, 0x00000000,
0x804E63A3)

I have no new hardware or software and I can't actually
do anything because I can't get past the screen. Using F8
in order to start in Safe Mode or with Last Known Good
Configuration is no good as the blue screen and message
just come back. I don't know what to do???

Please tell me there is a simple fix :)

Format your drive. Install the OS 'clean'. Restore all your important data and move on - avoiding sp2 next time.

I can't format the drive. The installation CD doesn't
start and I don't know how to get past the blue screen.

Trying to format from the CD doesn't work as it won't
start.

I also need to make sure I don't lose any of the files on
my PC.

Set your BIOS to boot from the CD drive.

What? No backup?

Oops!!

Boot to Last Known . .
Boot to safe mode

Boot to a command prompt

Save/copy the files you can't 'lose' to other storage

If your important data is still on the drive and it's not damaged you can salvage it

Try booting in safe mode. If this works chances are you have a 16bit drive
loading that SP2 does not like.

Hi,
There should be some dmp files in c:\windows\minidump. Try sending some
of those to me and I'll see if they indicate the problem. If not there are
some tools we can use to help find the real culprit.
