XP problems

Am getting desperate for help with some XP issues: Just
installed the upgrade from 98, onto formatted hard disc.
Starts off ok but gradually problems develop (having
reinstalled it about 4 times). Won't shutdown, endprog
can't close DEVLDR whatever that is, have to perform
dirty shutdown. On startup it finds some mystery PCI
hardware tries to install a PCI simple comms controller -
what is this and why?? Can anyone help me with these

This can usually be fixed by updating your audio drivers to the latest
Creative release.
