Had problems installing XP. First install failled because WINDOWS COULD NOT
START BECAUSE FOLLOWING FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT <windows
root>\system32\hal.dll
Now when the OS boots, there are two options:
"SELECT OS TO START "MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION"
"SELECT OS TO START "MICROSOFT WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION"

The first option starts the OS, The second gives the error message above.
1) Why does it referance the first install, it formatted both times...
2) Can it be removed
3) It will not boot without the CD installed. With the disk removed, it says
"NONSYSTEM DISK REMOVE BLA, BLA,BLA" (you get the picture)...I have to
reinstall the disk, and reboot.

Any suggestions...

Thanks, Paul...

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
