XP problems.. checkdisk

I am having major problems. Yesterday my system would not
boot after a lockup. I finally got it to boot.... and it
ran the checkdisk. Checkdisk stopped after stage 3
(security deceiptors, ?) and would not go any further.

If I bypass checkdisk, XP boots and does fine. The first
minute or so after the boot is complete is really slow but
after that it is OK.

When I restart, it goes straight back to Checkdisk.... if
I do nothing it will finally start to boot windows but it
says OPERATING SYSYTEM CANNOT BE FOUND... but if I bypass
checkdisk altogether, XP starts.

Any advice....
