What exactly does Checkdisk do?

Lately I've worked on several problematic computers, and in each case the
problems were resolved with the Checkdisk utility. Tonight a computer would
not boot to Windows in any mode. I removed its hard drive, slaved it to
another XP computer, and ran checkdisk on it with the option to fix the
problems. Afterwards I reinstalled the hard drive and the computer ran
fine.

What exactly is chkdsk doing? Whatever the case, it seems to be a very
powerful (and immensely useful) tool. Given the fact that three computers
I've worked on lately would not boot to Windows, I'm not sure what I would
have done without it.
