I have been having problems with XP after start up. Once I double click on a
program to open it as soon as windows has loaded, I need to hold the shift
button down until it makes a certain noise (usually about 15 beeps, then a
ring), before I can type anything? Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Hi MHP,

Holding down Shift when Windows starts prevents items in the Startup
folder from executing.

Could you have installed any utilities that are causing this behavior?
Check the Accessibility Options in Control Panel to see if any of those
have been enabled.

You may be infected with malware.

Does the same thing happen in Safe Mode (reboot, after BIOS screen
repeatedly press F8 until a menu comes up)?

I have checked the accessibility options, and nothing is enabled, and yes,
the same thing happens in safe mode. It doesn't matter what program I try to
open either. It could be an office program, adobe, or anything. Once I open
the program, I cannot type anything until I hold the shift button down, even
in safe mode.

Safe Mode doesn't start any background programs. Does the same thing
happen if you just double click on My Computer? The beeping and ring
thing isn't Windows, unless like I said, your computer is infected.

I would suggest trying a different keyboard to see if anything changes.
