I bought a new computer in germany and because the
programmes were all in german, my husband reformatted and
put in xp pro. However, he had somehow put it in twice.
It won't let me uninstall in the add/remove section. When
I turn the computer on I am given a choice of which xp
systems i want to run. I now cannot run the first one -
error comes up ....file missing or corrupt <windows
root>system32\hal.dll ANY IDEAS??

Hi,

Start/run C:\boot.ini

Remove the reference to the unwanted installation from the [operating
systems] section. You might also start/run msconfig, go to the boot.ini tab
and click the button to "check all boot paths", it should offer to remove
invalid ones.

If there are system folders associated with the unwanted installation, you
should be able to simply delete these using Windows explorer.

Start - Run and type in
MSConfig.exe
In the Boot.ini page click 'Check All Paths' and it will find and offer
to remove that incorrect one.

In fact he did *not* format the disk, but did a New install into the
same space. There is unlikely to be any significant amount of rubbish
files left - but the *best* course would be to start over. Set the
machine to boot CD before hard disk (hit the appropriate hot key as it
powers on to get into the Setup, then if there i not a Boot page where
you can move the CD line i=up, look in 'BIOS settings' for Boot Order
and use PageDn to cycle round to CD-Rom; C:. Hit ESC and Exit and Save
settings, with the XP CD ready in the drive.

Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install. When
it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and *delete* the current
partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage
