XP pro / XP home network misbehaviour

S

sabex

Both machines are on the same workgroup and are physically connected
with a router.
I can 'see' the shared folders on each machine and I can browse those
folders. I can create files on the other machine's folders and I can
copy files to the other machine's folders.
I can't read files on the other machine's folders, that I did not
place there.

I am using SFS, all other connections are great.
The sharing is set up "allow network users to update my files" is
checked.
Its obviously a permissions thing, but SFS is supposed to bypass all
that.
Error message reads:
cannot copy filename: Access is denied
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is
not currently in use.

When I view the folder settings, the read only attribute is got a grey
check mark which won't go away, but all the files are unchecked...

I am running Norton Firewall. When its disabled it makes no
difference.

I am up to date on all the Service Packs on both machines...
Anyone have any ideas?

On XP Home, and on XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled, make sure that the
Guest account is enabled, on each computer. Enable Guest, with Start - Run -
"cmd", then type "net user guest /active:yes" in the command window. Ensure
that the password for Guest is blank, with Start - Run - "control
userpasswords2"; select Guest, click Reset Password, click OK without entering a
new password.

On XP Pro, if you're going to use Guest authentication, check your Local
Security Policy (Control Panel - Administrative Tools) - User Rights Assignment,
on the XP Pro computer, and look at "Deny access to this computer from the
network". Make sure Guest is not in the list. Look at "Access this computer
from the network", and make sure that Everyone is in this list.

Were the other folders / files, that you did not place there, placed there by an
administrative account? Remember that you can't have administrative access to a
share using Simple File Sharing.

If no help yet, un install Norton Firewall, using instructions provided by
Symantec. Or enable it, and configure it properly.

I am using SFS on both machines, the Guest account is enabled on both
machines.
Both machine's default user has administrator access. Is that the
cause of the problem?
Is there a way around that?I am the only one with access to my
machines and I hate having to log-on / off to to do installs and other
admin type stuff....
