XP Pro /w98SE upgrade problem

Hi,

I am attempting an upgrade install of XP Pro over a well behaved w98SE single home PC installation.
All goes well until just after the first reboot of the install process, then the install dumps because XP has detected a "corrupted C Drive that cannot be repaired".

The machine runs fine and I have run w98 scandisk all the way through the "thorough" cycle with no problems reported. I have also run scandisk from a DOS command prompt with no problems reported. I checked the compatibility report and eliminated a couple of potential problem apps. No hardware problems detected. This is an ASUS A7V266 mobo using an Ali IDE controller and an IBM DPTA series HDD running in DMA 4.

Any suggestions how I can get past this point? I cannot detect any hardware problem with the drive and I couldn't find a KB article that pertains.

Have you run an 'older version' of Partition Magic against this drive? I've
read in other posts here that doing so can cause this problem.

Unfortunately, the posts I saw didn't say _why_ this causes a problem, or
how to fix it, nor did they say what versions of PM they meant..

Cheers(?),

Greetings --

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective hardware
(particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will still
support Win9x.

No. PM has not been used on this drive. But its possible this drive has been cloned using drive image. I have built many machines for my family and have swapped drives, etc. Who can remember? As I noted, this is a 1 year old ASUS mobo that can run XP just fine.

Thanks.

Thanks for responding. As I mentioned, I did run the compatibility tests and removed potentially troublesome software. No hardware incompatibilities were reported and the issue is unlikely to be a driver. This is a handbuilt machine using an ASUS mobo that can easily handle XP. Another person suggested that the use of a third party partition manager may be the cause of the "Corrupted" message. That is possible as I might have used Drive Image when I set this up. However, scandisk seems to think the partitioning and drive is fine. Perhaps I'll just have to wipe the drive but this is my spouse's machine and wiping the drive could be hazardous to my health...

Thanks.
