XP Pro very slow opening programs

Have new P4 2.4 ghz with 512 mb memory. It worked fine for a few weeks, but now when I double click a program(email, office, browser, etc) it sometimes takes about five minutes for the program to open. Once it opens it seems to work O.K.
I have tried disabling all startup items with msconfig, but it didn't help. If I try to open several different programs in a row, I see the pointer turn into an hourglass for a few seconds, but nothing happens, then about five minutes later, the programs will all start opening and seem to all work O.K
Any suggestions????

Are you using Norton Anti-virus? Try this:
