If I have Windows 98 full version running and wish to
install Windoes XP Pro:
1. Will a full version of XP Pro upgrade my windows 98
version or do I need an upgrade version only?

Either the "retail" upgrade or full version of Windows XP can
be used to upgrade over Windows 98. However, an "OEM version"
of Windows XP cannot be used for upgrading.

Windows Millennium Edition to Windows XP

Hi

Here something to consider. My advice is don't upgrade per se. Do a
clean install from a wiped drive. Buy the upgrade version and install to a
wiped drive. Any wierds problems you may have with 98 or 98SE won't be be
carried over. Also, XP Pro offers you the chance of using the NTFS (NT file
system) which will greatly reduce your disk problems and program anamolies.

Of course you'll need to transfer your data (not programs, for which you
have all the discs, right?) to a second HD before you wipe your first. 10
GB used drives should be really cheap. When you do the install just use the
XP Pro upgrade disc and repartion the drive to NTFS during the intial phases
of the install. At some point the machine will ask you to insert your
previously licensed copy of Win98 CD to verify that you qualify for the
upgrade.

Either will work.

However note that the OEM version (which many people confuse with
the full version) will *not* do an upgrade.

A retail Full version (but not an OEM one) will do upgrades. But also
an Upgrade version will do a clean install, if shown the previous system
in the process, eg by putting the CD in the drive when asked. So there
is no need to pay extra for the Full version.

OEM ones, 'for supply only with a new computer', will only do a clean
install - and also are only licensed to the initial machine; they may
not be moved on to another one. ANd they carry no support from
Microsoft - that is up to the vendor
