Anyone know why after updating computer xp starts to boot and gets
almost to the welcome screen and then shuts down and repeats the
process. There is no error message. If I restore from backup the
compter works fine.

What updates? It would help if you provided some specific, detailed
information on the problem. Also if this is a windows update problem
try posting to that newsgroup, and include more info.

Congratulations on showing why having backups turns potential
nightmares to mild curiosities.

When was the last time you sucessfully updated, it would help narrow
the list of potential bad updates down.

It's been approximately three months so there is a long list of
critical updates to d/l. Guess one way would be to download one at a
time till I find the one that locks my machine in the endless clycle.

And as far as backup I learned my lesson the hard way. The first time
it happened I did not have a backup:(. As soon as I got my computer
back up and running I went out and bought backup and recovery tools.
The old 'It'll never happen to me':)

Since you will download a long list critical updates, I suggest do a
repair install to save valuable time finding the root cause of rogue
downloads. It is virtually impossible to know which critical update is
bad as all updates are suspect. Why we need all these updates every
month only MS knows.

One thing is quite clear though. The updates in April were to stop HP
and Nvidia drivers to run properly on any system and a new version was
released on 04/25 but it introduced even more problems.

Agreed Anon.
And to add to this, there were others in April that caused probs to IE and
OE and I believe Word.
You will also have the chance to NOT download the dreaded WGA, which in down
as a critical, but some say it is NOT critical. Read that one very
carefully - Unlike other updates, once downloaded you cannot remove it -
only disable it.
If you have not yet read the threads/posts about this Windows Genuine
Advantage, in newsgroups basic/general/newusers, it may be a good idea to do
so.
Take care out there - the choice is yours
