XP pro SP2 install problem -can't find winsrv?!!!

Installed sp2 last nite, rebooted as prompted and once xp
tried to load got a "can't find winsrv, possibly reloading
update will correct problem" or close to that error.
Rebooting numerous times didn't help.
Rebooting into safe mode didn't work either. I just got
black screen filled with file names ending mostly
in .sys.

How do I restore the setpoint I made before SP2 install?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but since my file system is NTFS
based and not FAT32, I could not have made a recovery disk
for XP. Booting on my XP pro install disk and and going
to the recovery console only gets me to the C:\windows
directory. How do I restore from there??
I really don't want to reinstall XP SP1!!
