XP Pro shutdown problem, SP2, Multiple accounts

On installing SP2 onto a perfectly working computer with two user accounts I
started to experience shutdown problems. The screen will sometimes hang after
the 'save settings', 'shutting down' screen. You actually hear the hard drive
power down.

Since then I have, for other reasons, had to reformat and reinstall XP Pro
with SP2. Everything worked fine on this new clean system until I created
another user account for my wife. Back comes the shut down problem. I've read
most articles on the Web concerning shut down problems but none appear to be
relevant to my particular problem.

Any ideas?

I know that anti-virus utilties that check the floppy drive during the
shutdown can "hang" the shutdown.

I have disabled the option in my anti-virus utility to check the floppy
drive during shutdown and for most of the day experienced no further
problems. I thought I had the problem solved but alas my computer has just
hung on shutdown once again.

I am now of the opinion that it is related to Norton Anti-Virus because
after a hang I immediately reboot and check the application log in the 'event
viewer' in the 'admin' section of the 'control panel'. At the point of the
hang it reports a problem with 'userenv' which indicates that another service
is hanging onto my registry at shutdown. My guess is that it is 'ccApp' (part
of Norton Anti-Virus) which seems to frequently have problems closing down at
shutdown, often causing the 'terminate program' dialog box to appear on
shutdown.

Anyone else having shutdown problems and running Norton Anti-Virus?

This is what happened to me just the other day. I deleted the brigde.dll from
my registry. I did this becuase I downloaded a program that after decoding
the .exe file and looking at it I noticed some references to bridge my
connection to this site which I never agreed to.flintstone.com... what ever ,
so I went into the registry and deleted things and apparently some wrong
things cuase I created problems with apps from starting with their shortcuts.
Anyways, so I decided to reinstall XP w/SP1 and this being really the
problem; My PC now will not shut down automatically and now it says something
about ServicePack2 and 'The area where you get to after you choose Shutdown
the Computer, you know the option to "Standby" "Turn Off" and "Restart" ,
well I no longer get the "Standby" option. I had not installed SP2 O'yeah I
run a legal copy of XP PRO. I had heard to much going wrong with the SP2
update. Upon reinstall all service revert back and that is why SP2 ended up
on my mmachine. After that reinstall I lost all of my updates I had already ,
pretty sure on that one. Well I realise that this is a long topic I've wrote
and sorry for that too , but I hope that it will help someone.

That wasn't the way to remove bridge.dll which is part of spyware. Use
a combination of the good freeware spyware cleaners. Also there are
specific directions on the web for removing this pest. In one analogy
you used an H-bomb to remove a flea.
